ONDO Finance: the Trojan horse of institutional tokenisation? 🏛️⛓️

Hi team! ☕️

It is 18 August 2026, 10:22 pm. As you read these lines, the crypto market is still digesting the day's announcements. And believe me, there is plenty to chew on.

Today I decided to dive into ONDO Finance, not because the token jumped 20% overnight (well…), but because it single-handedly embodies the big shift of this cycle: traditional finance is no longer adopting crypto, it is absorbing it. And ONDO is one of the best examples of this synthesis between TradFi and DeFi.

In this article, I offer you a complete altcoin profile, the way you like them, with a little twist: we will read it in the light of the Grand Angle Crypto video (in French), which brilliantly analysed this phenomenon of "recentralisation" and "value capture". Hold on tight, this is heavy stuff.

⚠️ Point to watch: figures and roadmaps change all the time. The article dates from 18 August 2026; it was updated on 24 October 2026 (tokenomics, products and assets under management checked, with the date of each figure).

📉 1. The macro context: when Wall Street swallows crypto

Before talking about ONDO, we need to set the scene. Because ONDO is not just another altcoin: it is infrastructure for tokenising real-world assets (RWAs). And to understand its rise, we have to look at what is happening around us.

This morning, a MiCA-compliant European fund officially integrated ONDO Finance's tokenised products. It is news that confirms an underlying trend: traditional players are increasingly using blockchain rails to issue and manage financial assets. According to data compiled by The Block (18 August 2026), the total value of tokenised assets has grown by 66% since the start of the year, to more than $23 billion. And the tokenised equities sub-market has soared 2,900% in a year. Yes, you read that right.

Grand Angle Crypto sums it up perfectly in its latest video: the disruption crypto promised has taken an unexpected path. While AI destroys the moats of the software giants (the MSCI World Software Index has lost 20% since January), the S&P 500 Financials is at an all-time high. Creative destruction did not happen in finance; it was absorbed by Wall Street. That is exactly ONDO's playing field.

Key point: the Total 3 crypto index (excluding BTC, ETH and stablecoins) remains at relatively low levels. "Classic" altcoins are suffering, while tokenisation protocols are attracting capital. Be careful: a protocol's success does not necessarily translate into the price of its token, and ONDO is a good example of this (see below).

🔥 2. The narrative of the moment: a revolution of use, not speculation

The Grand Angle Crypto video highlights a crucial paradigm shift: the market follows value, not ideology.

In recent months we have seen a wave of "openly embraced recentralisation". Maker is rebranding as Sky and adding a freeze function to its USDS stablecoin. Aave is tearing itself apart over governance. And Crosschain Protocol went as far as proposing to dissolve its DAO and turn its token into shares in a US company. The token jumped 80%.

What does this movement teach us? That most users do not want to be their own bank. Despite FTX, a large share of bitcoins remains entrusted to third parties: according to Glassnode, just under 15% of the supply was on exchanges at the end of 2025, and US ETFs held around 6.5%, not counting custodians and companies. Self-custody is seen as a burden, not a freedom. Traditional finance's arrival in the ecosystem implies partnerships, clear legal contracts and legal responsibilities — in short, structures that a DAO cannot provide as effectively as a conventional company.

ONDO is the archetype of this pragmatism. It is a protocol that uses blockchain to make traditional assets more liquid, more accessible and more composable, while complying with regulatory requirements. Not an anarchist revolution, but a deep upgrade of financial infrastructure.

In this context, tokenisation is no longer a promise: it is a reality. BlackRock, Franklin Templeton, the NYSE, the World Gold Council… all are moving forward. And ONDO is on the front line.

💎 3. ONDO Finance: the complete profile

Now let's get to the heart of the matter. Here is my structured analysis of ONDO, a protocol I have been following closely since its early days.

🔹 Introduction & positioning

ONDO Finance is a real-world asset (RWA) tokenisation platform that aims to bring DeFi's liquidity and composability to traditional financial assets. In practice, Ondo offers three families of products:

  • OUSG (Ondo Short-Term U.S. Government Treasuries), reserved for qualified investors and backed by short-term US Treasury bills — today mainly through BlackRock's tokenised money market fund, BUIDL;
  • USDY, a yield-bearing token backed by Treasury bills and bank deposits, available without prior approval to non-US investors;
  • Ondo Global Markets, which offers more than 260 US stocks, ETFs and ADRs in token form.

OUSG was launched in January 2023, more than a year before BUIDL: Ondo is therefore both a pioneer and a BlackRock client.

Why now? Because interest rates remain high enough to make Treasury bills attractive (around 3.6% for OUSG and USDY in early October 2026), and tokenisation makes them accessible 24/7.

🔹 Origins and history

  • Founders: Nathan Allman and his team, from Goldman Sachs and other financial institutions. Nathan Allman worked in particular on structured products trading. His institutional network was decisive for the first partnerships.
  • Year founded: 2021. ONDO emerged during the bear market, which allowed it to build without excessive hype.
  • How it launched: a community sale (the "Community Access Sale") took place on CoinList in 2022, for about 2% of the supply. The ONDO token became tradable in January 2024, with gradual unlocks for private investors and the team.
  • Key events:
    • 2021-2022: first crypto yield products (Ondo Vaults), before the pivot to real-world assets.
    • January 2023: launch of OUSG, one of the first tokenised Treasury bill funds.
    • 2023-2024: launch of USDY for non-US investors and of Flux Finance (lending and borrowing with OUSG as collateral), then instant OUSG minting and redemption in USDC.
    • 2025-2026: multi-chain expansion (Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Sui, Mantle…), the announcement of Ondo Chain, its own blockchain dedicated to real-world assets, and the launch of Ondo Global Markets for tokenised stocks (partnership with Franklin Templeton on five ETFs in March 2026). According to CoinDesk, a MiCA-compliant European fund integrated Ondo products on 18 August 2026.
    • Criticisms: the centralisation of the minting and redemption process (KYC, whitelisting) and dependence on a small number of partners (the manager of the underlying fund, custodians).

🔹 The problem to solve (the "why")

Traditional finance suffers from two ills: the illiquidity of fractional assets and inefficient secondary markets. Buying a Treasury bond through a traditional broker settles in one or two days, often requires high minimum amounts, and the position cannot be used as collateral in DeFi.

ONDO solves this problem by tokenising these assets. A bond becomes an ERC-20 token (or SPL on Solana) compatible with any wallet. You can transfer it instantly, fractionalise it, use it as collateral for a DeFi loan, and redeem it at any time (subject to conditions).

The value proposition in one sentence: "ONDO brings TradFi's stable, safe returns into DeFi's fluid, programmable world."

As Grand Angle Crypto explains, this is the third layer of monetary abstraction: after gold, paper and bank money, we move to programmable on-chain representation. ONDO is one of the builders of this layer.

🔹 How it works technically (the "how")

  • Type of blockchain: ONDO is not a blockchain in itself, but a decentralised application (dApp) deployed on several L1s/L2s (Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Sui, Mantle…), pending its own chain, Ondo Chain.
  • Consensus mechanism: inherited from the underlying chains (PoS for Ethereum and Solana, etc.)
  • Distinctive innovations:
    • Minting and redemption architecture: verified (KYC) investors deposit USDC and receive OUSG tokens; redemption works the other way round. Thanks to a USDC liquidity reserve, minting and redemption are instant, 24/7, whereas a conventional fund settles at T+1 or T+2. The trade-off: only verified addresses can hold OUSG.
    • Multi-chain compatibility: Ondo's products exist on several blockchains, which increases their liquidity and integration into DeFi.
    • DeFi integration: OUSG can be deposited as collateral on platforms such as Flux Finance, making it possible to borrow stablecoins against one's positions.

Key technical point: Ondo relies on regulated partners (the manager of the underlying fund, custodians, a collateral agent such as Ankura Trust for USDY) to guarantee that the tokens are backed by real assets. Attestations are published regularly.

🔹 The ONDO token: tokenomics

  • Name & ticker: ONDO.
  • Maximum supply: 10 billion ONDO (fixed).
  • Circulating supply: about 4.9 billion ONDO (nearly 49% of the maximum supply) since the January 2026 unlock; further unlocks are scheduled until 2029.
  • Allocation: ecosystem growth 52.1%, protocol development 33%, private sales 12.9%, community sale 2%.
  • Utility:
    • Governance: ONDO holders vote within the Ondo DAO, notably on Flux Finance's parameters.
    • No revenue sharing: to date, no mechanism passes the fees from Ondo's products on to token holders, and there are no buybacks or burns.
  • Unlock pressure: successive unlocks for private investors and contributors weigh on the price. In mid-June 2026, ONDO was trading at around $0.38, far from its all-time high of nearly $2.14.

⚠️ Fundamental criticism (inspired by the Grand Angle Crypto video):
Does the ONDO token really capture a share of the value generated by the protocol? That is the question every investor must ask. Today, governance is the only formal link between the protocol's success and the token's value. But as GAC points out, a token is neither a claim on cash flows nor a share. The market may applaud the end of a token (as with Crosschain Protocol) or, on the contrary, doubt its relevance. For ONDO, as long as the protocol has not introduced a clear revenue-sharing mechanism, the token's value is largely a matter of social consensus and speculation.

This is a major point to watch.

🔹 Governance and organisation

  • Who decides? A DAO (Ondo DAO) exists, but in reality it is strongly influenced by the founding team and early investors. Votes are on-chain, but participation is low.
  • Underlying trend: like other protocols, ONDO could be tempted by a more "conventional" structure to make institutional partnerships easier. For now, the team is sticking with the DAO, but the question remains open.

🔹 Ecosystem and adoption

  • Main products:
    • USDY: about $2.3 billion in circulation in early October 2026 (rwa.xyz).
    • OUSG: about $320 million at the same date (rwa.xyz).
    • Ondo Global Markets: more than $1 billion in assets in under eight months, according to Ondo.
    • Flux Finance: a lending and borrowing protocol linked to Ondo, which accepts OUSG as collateral.
  • Notable partners: BlackRock (the BUIDL fund, OUSG's underlying), Franklin Templeton, Coinbase, Circle (USDC).
  • Activity metrics: Ondo claims more than $3.7 billion in assets across all products in 2026 (a figure reported by the company), and around 68,000 unique holders.

🔹 Advantages

  1. Backing by regulated real-world assets: the products are based on Treasury bills and regulated funds, with regular attestations. That is rare in DeFi.
  2. Treasury yields accessible on-chain: around 3.6% a year in early October 2026, with 24/7 liquidity.
  3. Interoperability and composability: OUSG can be used as collateral in other protocols, creating an ecosystem around risk-free yield.
  4. Built-in compliance: KYC and address whitelists by design, which reassures institutions.
  5. Pioneering position: ONDO was one of the first to launch a large-scale bond tokenisation product, even before BlackRock.

🔹 Drawbacks and criticisms

  1. Centralisation: the minting and redemption process is highly centralised (mandatory KYC, whitelists, addresses can be frozen). This may put off purists and reduce resilience.
  2. Uncertain tokenomics: no mechanism for sharing revenue with token holders, and significant unlocks still to come.
  3. Barrier to entry: OUSG is reserved for qualified investors; USDY is closed to US persons. The general public does not have access to every product.
  4. Dependence on partners: Ondo depends on the manager of the underlying fund, on custodians and on liquidity providers. A failure by any of them could disrupt redemptions.
  5. Growing competition: BlackRock, Franklin Templeton and many start-ups offer similar products. The war on fees and liquidity is raging.

🔹 Competition and positioning

Project Type of product Differentiator
Ondo Finance Tokenised Treasury bills (OUSG, USDY), tokenised stocks Pioneer, broad range, multi-chain, Flux Finance
BlackRock BUIDL Tokenised money market fund The world's largest asset manager; also OUSG's underlying
Franklin Templeton (BENJI) Tokenised money market fund Long-established manager, institutional approach
Maple Finance Tokenised private credit Loans to institutions rather than government bonds

Assets under management change quickly: see rwa.xyz for up-to-date figures.

ONDO's differentiator lies in its ecosystem thesis: it does not just tokenise assets, it builds DeFi primitives around them (Flux Finance) to unlock composability. Its token (albeit imperfect) lets holders take part in governance, which traditional funds do not offer.

🔹 Future and roadmap

  • Work in progress:
    • the rollout of Ondo Chain;
    • the expansion of Ondo Global Markets (new stocks and ETFs, derivatives);
    • new licences in Europe under MiCA;
    • a possible value-capture mechanism for the ONDO token, eagerly awaited by the community but not announced to date.
  • Potential catalysts: if Ondo manages to link protocol revenue to the token, it could be re-rated. Adoption by a major European bank would also be a strong signal.

🔹 Risks and warnings

  • Volatility: the ONDO token remains extremely volatile, subject to crypto market cycles.
  • Regulatory risk: whether tokens are classified as "securities" remains uncertain, especially if ONDO starts distributing yield.
  • Technical risk: smart contract bugs, bridge exploits, etc.
  • Liquidity risk: in a crisis, the liquidity reserve might not be enough to ensure instant redemptions, and redemptions would revert to the pace of the underlying fund.

🎯 Conclusion: ONDO, the bridge between two worlds

On this 18 August 2026, ONDO Finance perfectly embodies the great paradox of this cycle: crypto has not managed to impose decentralisation, but it has forced traditional finance to improve. ONDO is both a product of this assimilation and a player driving this transformation.

As Grand Angle Crypto puts it, we may not have won the token holders' utopian revolution, but we have won a big upgrade of financial infrastructure. ONDO is one of its pillars.

For what kind of investor? If you are a patient investor who believes in real-world asset tokenisation as a new infrastructure paradigm, ONDO is one to watch. But you have to be clear-eyed: the current tokenomics are still imperfect, and the token could remain a mere "tracking stock" of the ecosystem without direct value capture. The ball is in the team's court to convert the try.

And you, team? Do you think the tokens of RWA protocols like ONDO will manage to capture a share of the value generated, or are they doomed to remain governance tokens with no real substance? Tell me everything in the comments. 🔥
